African group makes list of ‘no-go’ areas before World Cup

The FIFA World Cup is often considered an occasion to ignore differences and make friends. But ahead of Germany 2006, which kicks off on June 9, there have been several concerns that black fans and other non-white people may be subjected to serious racial attacks.

The debate started when the former government spokesman under chancellor Gerhard Schroeder, Uwe-Karsten Heye, warned that black visitors coming to Germany for the World Cup should avoid certain parts of the host cities. His comment drew mixed criticism and support.

“There are small and medium-sized towns in Brandenburg, as well as elsewhere, which I would advise a visitor of another skin color to avoid going to… It is possible he wouldn’t get out alive,” Heye warned.

PovertyThe escalation of violent crimes in T&T has politicians, business people, the police and concerned citizens not knowing which way to turn. In this climate of criminality, the Government has squandered millions in state of the art technology, promised action plans which failed to materialize and most recently have invited foreign police officers to arrest the problem.

Cops arrest man in orphan’s rape

Police yesterday launched a manhunt for a woman and her brother in the sexual and physical abuse of children.

Northern and Southern Division police searched both Laventille and Princes Town for the couple, who has been closely linked with operations at a Claxton Bay home. The two have allegedly been squandering funds and starving the children, police said.

Sunday Food For Thought

Both Raffique Shah’s column at Trinicenter.com and the Express analysis of the similarities of abuse and failure in Nixmary’s and Emily’s cases require more than Sunday reading before lunch, then putting away the papers for a good meal and an afternoon nap.

It seems to me that they require printing out or cutting out by every individual in every government agency that deals with children, including, and especially magistrates and police officers and posting above a sheet labelled ‘Action Plan For Today’.

Cops move on CJ’s Chambers

FRAUD Squad detectives yesterday obtained a warrant to search the Chambers of Chief Justice Satnarine Sharma at the Hall of Justice.

This move has come as the investigation into allegations that Shar-ma attempted to influence Chief Magistrate Sher-man McNicolls in the recently concluded trial of former prime minister Basdeo Panday draws to a close.

The action has also occurred while Sharma is attending an overseas conference in the Czech Republic and while lead investigator, Assistant Commissioner of Police Wellington Virgil, remains at a private health institution recovering from minor surgery to his left foot.

Sean Luke, 6, buggered with canestalk, killed

Domestic ViolenceBuggered until dead, the body of little Sean Luke was found in a canefield near his home at Orange Valley, Couva, yesterday.

The six-year-old, a United States citizen, would have felt no fear, smiling and laughing with the predator until he was stripped of his clothing and killed in a most agonising way.

Pathologist Dr Eastlyn Mc Donald Burris found during a preliminary examination yesterday that the killer inserted a sugarcane stalk into the boy’s rectum, and pushed it until it reached the child’s throat.

His intestines were ruptured and other organs damaged.

He died from internal bleeding.
