Schoolgirl abducted, raped

Saturday, June 2 2007

Violence on WomenMINUTES after leaving her south Trinidad home on Thursday to attend classes at a nearby secondary school, a 17-year-old girl was attacked and raped by two men.

A police report stated that the student boarded a black car which she believed was a taxi at about 9 am, to attend to classes. The report stated that the driver, upon reaching the vicinity of the school, he changed directions and instead drove towards a nearby village.

On realising something was wrong, the girl tried to open the back door to escape but a man who was also seated in the back grabbed onto her.

According to the report, the student was taken to an abandoned house where the men took turns raping her.

After the assault, the men took the weeping teen to Sangre Grande where she was released.

A report was made to the Sangre Grande police station and the teen was taken to the area hospital where medical examinations confirmed she was sexually assaulted. The girl was later treated and sent home. Up to late yesterday no arrests were made and investigations are continuing.

  1. Oh, God! trinicenter.com must have been listing this article as I was writing my latest comment on the guru.

  2. The silent shame of male rape
Police officials say figures representing the number of men who are raped in Trinidad and Tobago each year are limited and may be incorrect. “We think it is a highly under-reported crime,” said one corporal.

While the law is clear that buggery is an offence, the social stigma of a man saying, “I was raped,” discourages many victims from coming forward.

However, one man has come forward to tell his story.

  3. One man willing to speak out is a start. I salute him. Too mny people apparently think that rape is about sex.its about power.Reporting the abuse is one small step in defeating the power of rapists. The fact that there is still no prosecution in the Akiel Chambers case,is also evidence of some weakneses in our society. Unfortunately, society has also failed to protect little girls. Those young boys who have disappeared Mark Prescott, Vishnu have been taken somewhere.

One day we would come around to upholding the dignity of all people, and male rape victims will be able to appear in court without fear of community ridicule. Until that dy, we hope.
