THE BATTLE for political control of this country begins in earnest at seven o’clock tonight when the ruling People’s National Movement (PNM) led by Prime Minister Patrick Manning and the Opposition United National Congress (UNC) led by Kamla Persad-Bissessar, launch their party’s respective general election campaign.

‘COP a waste’… Sat: Political ground has shifted
HEAD of the Sanatan Dharma Maha Sabha, (SDMS) Sat Maharaj yesterday endorsed the resignation of former Congress of the People candidate Devant Maharaj, saying the political ground has ‘shifted’ to the UNC. Maharaj, who last week expressed his support for the UNC and Kamla Persad-Bissessar, said he feels the two parties are no longer in the same league as the COP doesn’t have as much to offer in the way of strong candidates.

ANGERED at being snubbed by his own constituency executive members who have thrown their support behind young Ravi Rattiram as their choice to contest the Tabaquite seat for the UNC in the snap general election, former MP Ramesh Lawrence Maharaj yesterday declared: “I am and will always remain a member of the United National Congress. The UNC is my political home and nobody is going to run me out of the UNC!”
Rafeeq, Bharath to file papers today
FORMER Caroni Central MP Dr Hamza Rafeeq is expected to file nomination papers as he seeks to be selected by the UNC to contest that seat in the general election. Rafeeq has represented that seat since 1995.

Network of NGOs of Trinidad and Tobago for the Advancement of Women co-ordinator, Hazel Brown, has called on Prime Minister Patrick Manning to stop picking on his Arima MP, Pennelope Beckles, after she expressed praise for the woman who would be fighting Manning to become Trinidad and Tobago’s next Prime Minister in the 2010 general election.

UNC political leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar yesterday said Prime Minister Patrick Manning’s decision to dissolve Parliament last Thursday, on the eve of the motion of no-confidence debate in the House of Representatives, stalled a vote which would have seen five PNM MPs voting in favour of the motion.
