Before the elections it was all about peace, love and togetherness. Speaking at Aranguez on May 22 Kamla Persad-Bissesar intoned “As we reach the end of this campaign, I want to thank everyone in and out of Trinidad and Tobago who has contributed to our efforts…Your efforts have been historic because, for the first time in our nation’s history, you have put aside the divisions of our past in order to reach across and unite for a better future and a better way.”

Do not mess with this sophisticated and unsuspecting T&T electorate. They will quickly appreciate that Opposition Leader Keith Rowley is using as a cheap political strategy the stirring up of trivialities on Mr. Warner’s FIFA connections geared exclusively to kick-start and feather his own dwindling, discredited and deteriorating political nest. His next volley against super-Mom Kamla’s PP Government will be a racism charge.

It spoke to the enormous challenges that face the PNM and the innumerable opportunities this new environment offers if only we can seize the moment.

PNM chairman Conrad Enill yesterday told Newsday that Diego Martin West MP Dr Keith Rowley has received the support of all 11 PNM MPs to become Leader of the Opposition.

Enill scotched previous reports that only ten MPs were backing Rowley, amid claims that Diego Martin North East MP Colm Imbert was not supporting Rowley but was himself seeking to become Opposition Leader. Enill said a letter with the names of all 11 of Rowley’s colleagues was sent yesterday to President George Maxwell Richards, indicating support for Rowley to become Opposition Leader.

I AM told by people who have witnessed election campaigns in other Caribbean countries that ours are not unique in their curious blend of the sacred and the profane. I regret not having experiences like theirs so I can make comparisons. I doubt, though, that elections platforms in any other country can rival ours when it comes to hypocrisy, contradictions and shamelessness.
