NOTHING stands in the way of President Anthony Carmona swearing in two new judges to the High Court.
In a unanimous decision yesterday, Justices of Appeal Allan Mendonca, Nolan Bereaux and Peter Rajkumar said they were satisfied the Judicial and Legal Services Commission (JLSC) was properly constituted. They also threw out a substantive claim of former United National Congress Senator Devant Maharaj who challenged the constitutionality of the JLSC’s composition, on the basis that the Constitution does not permit more than one retired judge to sit in the commission.

A 39-year-old woman, who has reported on several occasions that she is being stalked by a man at her Tunapuna home, is calling on police to do more to protect her and her two children. Lian David says she is terrified of the 56-year-old man against whom she has a court order.
On Wednesday last, the suspect pleaded guilty to three counts of stalking and harassing David and was ordered to stay 50 feet away from her home and her children’s school.

Fifteen-year-old Josiah Ramsahai who was killed by police last Friday in a reported shoot-out with police was shot five times with a high-powered rifle his autopsy revealed.
According to forensic pathologist, Dr Valery Alexandrov, the teen was shot once in the leg, twice in the hands and twice in the torso.

“JUSTICE must be tempered with mercy.” These were the words of Health Minister Terrence Deyalsingh as he announced there was a second chance being offered to the young female intern who cried wolf after claiming she was held up at gunpoint and robbed while on duty at the Port-of-Spain General Hospital, last month. However, after investigations were carried out, it was found that the intern had lied. She told investigators she was “under stress.” She was dismissed from the North West Regional Health Authority (NWRHA), under which the PoSGH falls. Deyalsingh said the intern, while no longer employed at the NWRHA, has been given six months to produce documentary evidence that shows she was fit and proper to resume duty.

FINANCE Minister Colm Imbert said on Tuesday that he will not comment at this time about the quashing of the 2014 audit report into the controversial LifeSport programme. In a ruling on Monday, Justice Mira Dean-Armorer quashed the report of the Ministry of Finance’s central audit committee into Life Sport. Imbert said he will not commenton this matter until he receives the written judgement or, “until I get clarity on excactly what the judge ordered.”
